BioRN Stem Cell Network

Within the collaborative project »BioRN Stem Cell Network« new results should be patented swiftly and further developed to create new medications with the support of the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.

The BioRN Stem Cell Network covers development projects of cancer stem cells as well as adult stem cells, with the Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine (HI-STEM) as the core institution. The HI-STEM was jointly established by the Dietmar Hopp Foundation, a private foundation that is the institutes major shareholder, and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), where the HI-STEM is located. Head of the institute is Andreas Trumpp, one of the world leaders in stem cell research.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Trumpp, managing director of HI-STEM gGmbH and speaker for the collaborative project BioRN Stem Cell Network, during a press conference at the first BioRN annual meeting in July 2009:

"Winning the leading-edge cluster competition Cell-Based & Molecular Medicine gives stem-cell research in Heidelberg and the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region an enormous boost. The goal of HI-STEM is to combine basic research in the field of cancer stem cells with aspects of translational medicine. In cooperation with biotech or large pharmaceutical companies, the results should be swiftly translated into marketable products for the fight against cancer. A particular focus lies on the development of new markers and technologies that will significantly improve the diagnosis and treatment of metastasized cancer stages, which are currently  almost impossible to treat successfully."
